Major Highways
Abstract: This data layer is a line shapefile of the major highways in the state derived from the 2000 TIGER Line Files. It is referenced to the Wisconsin Transverse Mercator (WTM) projection system, North American Datum 1983 with the 1991 adjustment (NAD83/91).
Purpose Description: This data layer is for use in generalized mapping applications. The level of accuracy does not support detailed local analysis. The data layer is intended for use with GIS software.
Access Constraints: There are no distribution constraints on this data layer.
Use Constraints: For use at scales no larger than 100,000.

Date: 2000Process Step Description: 2000 TIGER line files were downloaded off the U.S. Census Bureau's web site as zipped files. The zipped files were unzipped using PKZIP. The coverages were created through a series of AMLS run on ArcInfo workstation 8.0 on an NT operating system. The original coverages were in decimal degree, with a datum of NAD83. The coverages were reprojected into WTM83/91. The resulting coverages were then appended to form a statewide coverage. In the shapefile, roads along county boundaries may appear as a single road segment with two associated records. At a later date, the discrepencies between the two associated records will be resolved, as well as be reduced to one record per road segment.
